A suspenseful, darkly comic film about a Black woman who recently discovered that she’s a killer and must decide whether or not to spare her latest target at the risk of her own life.
Director’s Vision for ‘Savages’
Savages is a suspenseful, darkly comic film about a woman who recently discovered she’s a killer. The idea began as a way of exploring how Black people have historically been exploited for labor – in this case, as professional hitmen. Savages is ultimately a story about finding love, happiness and freedom.
In shooting the film, I wanted to create an evocative and gripping atmosphere in a sparse yet striking setting. In collaboration with Alex, the DP, and Monica, our production designer, we utilized the house and the camera to portray the loneliness and confusion plaguing Simone, to illustrate her evolving dynamics with other characters, and to viscerally capture her emotions. As we follow Simone’s journey, culminating in a deliberately ambiguous ending, I leave it up to the viewer to decide whether she’s found freedom.
