Good Grief is a dark comedic whirlwind, set in Salt Lake City Utah at a Mormon Mortuary. We follow Avery, the estranged daughter of the deceased, who is suffocated by her dysfunctional family at the viewing of her father’s body. Her patience wears thin as her family members continue to make the day about themselves, each person refusing to address the situation at hand. Eroded with guilt over her father’s last attempt at connection before his suicide, Avery reaches a breaking point with her annoying younger cousin, erupting a series of even bigger problems simmering under the service. Starring Craig Cackowski, Missy Yager, Anna LaMadrid and featuring John Carroll Lynch– Good Grief is a fast paced, overwhelming, emotional portrait of collective grief and the bizarre ways in which we cope.

Director’s Vision for ‘Good Grief’

When Rachel approached me with the script, I was excited by the opportunity to shape a hilariously tragic family dynamic on screen. I set out to find specific emotional arcs for each character in our ensemble and orchestrate a series of tangled vignettes, resulting in a deeply personal portrait of grief. We really wanted GOOD GRIEF to pack a punch and leave you feeling exhausted yet satisfied.
Currently, we’re developing the short into a feature to further explore mental health in the age of therapy and death in the age of social media.
