The Best Picks of The Month highlight our Daily Short Picks that resonated the most with us and our audience. These are the best picks for the month of July 2023.

These four short films present an array of captivating narratives. In “Poachers” by Tiffany Lin, two lifelong best friends stumble upon an unconventional business opportunity, illegally harvesting and selling succulents from the California coast, adding a twist to their last summer before college. “A Day Out” by Conor Champley centers around Ben, who has always shied away from commitment, but on this particular day, he finds himself facing matters of the heart. “Max” by Ant McPhail follows Russ, a 17-year-old grappling with the concept of manhood in his small coastal town in gun-controlled Australia. When he steals a shotgun, he confronts the local underworld heavyweight, ultimately choosing to define his own path instead of seeking validation from others. Lastly, “The Mirror,” directed and animated by Karl Poyzer (Floaters), presents a fully-CG music video for Ital Tek’s song “The Mirror,” exploring an entrancing visual journey in collaboration with music label PLANET MU. Each film captivates audiences with its unique storytelling and thought-provoking themes, ranging from friendship and self-discovery to defining one’s identity and artistic expression.
