A group of self-centered 20-somethings trying to navigate their way through relationships in a city that’s under constant attack from a giant, fire-breathing Japanese monster.

‘Running The Gammatar’ is straneously hilarious, having almost an allure of a ‘Seinfeld’ episode mixed with Godzilla, where a self-centered young man tries to navigate his way through relationships in a city that’s under constant attack from a giant, fire-breathing Japanese monster.

The film was shot in and around Philadelphia, PA in the US over the course of about 1.5 – 2 years (you can definitely see the length of my hair change throughout it), which was due to the very low budget ($1,700 out of my own pocket); it meant that we had to shoot on whatever weekends people or locations were available. Most of that was done in 2013.

This actually turns out pretty well in the film showing a clear progression of time, giving a little reality and belief to the completely absurd.

I’m mostly drawn to movies and TV shows that deal with very relatable, everyday human issues – relationship problems, money problems, existential problems – and particularly when they’re dealt with comedically; I tend to find that that stuff goes down much easier (and to a much larger group of people) with a spoon full of sugar, basically. On the other hand, I grew up loving fun sci-fi and horror movies, and at some point a few years ago I realized that if I could drop the Woody Allen movie into the middle of the Godzilla movie, there’d probably be a lot of potential for laughs there.

The film holds no spectacular VFX or even costume and makeup, au-contraire, it’s purposely low-budget look and cheesiness makes the focus turn to the comedic script ran by it’s shallow conversations and pacy soundtrack.
