When a young couple confronts death, how do they manage to celebrate life? How do they rise from the trenches of despair and turn toward love and hope? Within Reach imagines a world just beyond the tipping point of climate crisis. A community is devastated by an unknown bacteria that has infiltrated its water supply. The government offers minimal assistance. Older people in the town have died off and the young are left with a mess of an inheritance. Within Reach is a love story. It is a story of perseverance. Facing annihilation, two kindred spirits have no delusions about their fate, yet find solace in each other and in the primacy of nature. For them, the Earth shines even though she is sick. This film is a snapshot of what could be. I hope it will also demonstrate the immutable power of human connection and of our interdependence with the natural world. Even in the worst of circumstances, we can find peace and freedom in the quiet beauty of our brief time together on this planet.
