Who doesn’t dream of a life on the road?

The story of a couple who decide to get away from it all and escape to a different kind of life.

The truth is, however, they simply had to leave.

Director’s Vision

The Caravan is a proudly zero-budget animated short film, produced by Dave Low during the Covid-19 pandemic, and is based on a fictional short story, written by David Willows in 2010 entitled The Couple in their Caravan.

By day, David works as Advancement Director at the International School of Brussels and Dave is a freelance graphic and motion designer in the UK and have been friends and collaborators for ten years.

After reading The Couple in their Caravan in 2017, Dave had the idea to adapt it into a short-form graphic novel. However, it was not actually realised until the first lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 presented the perfect sanity-preserving illustration project!

2021. Both Brussels and the UK were now in the grip of a second lockdown. David and Dave had the idea of creating an animated short, using some of the artwork from the graphic novel, and just using the tools and resources that they had to hand.

As a line from the film says: “Why not? What have we got to lose?”
With David recording the narration in a makeshift VO booth in his living room, Dave took the original illustrations (as well as some new ones, specifically for the short) drawn in Procreate on iPad pro, and colourised and animated them in After Effects.

After many late nights, weekends and lots of understanding from their respective spouses, The Caravan was completed over the first ten weeks of 2021 and shown for the first time online on 25 March.
