Director’s Vision for ‘Canary’
Back in 2020, a friend told me about sending their DNA to one of those ancestry companies to trace their roots. I remember thinking, Isn’t it a little weird to just hand over your DNA to a corporation? The more I thought about it, the more I started wondering, What’s the worst—or craziest—thing that could happen with that? What if these companies were hiding something darker? How would people react if that trust was totally shattered?
That’s where the idea for Canary came from. I originally wrote it as a feature film, but I wanted to test the waters first, so I decided to adapt it into a short film. We shot it over four days in Los Angeles on a super-tight $5,000 budget, and it wouldn’t have been possible without our super talented and hardworking crew. Everyone gave it their all to bring this idea to life.
This short is just the beginning—it’s a prologue to the bigger story I hope to tell one day. For now, I’m excited to see how people connect with it!
