Somna

Emily comes home late and finds her husband Anthony sleepwalking. As Anthony’s actions become more unpredictable, Emily is determined to keep herself – and her secret – safe.

Director’s Statement

Perhaps the most difficult battle for someone with a secret is the battle of knowledge. Paranoia and suspense creep in easily, and every step must be carefully measured and scrutinized as not to lose control of the reality the secret has created.

After a long period of living with night terrors as a child, I often wonder what would have happened if I had not grown out of them. The potential for violence or accidents during night terror episodes makes them dangerous, and a bit mysterious.

Somnambulism, or sleepwalking, consists of conscious actions controlled by the unconscious mind. I wanted to explore the concept of knowing and not knowing by way of consciousness and unconsciousness. A person with a secret, matched with an unconscious person, both whom equally cannot be held accountable for their actions, seemed to be the best way to explore the concept in a film.
