Mickey Mouse and his friends are back! Disney has decided it is time to bring Micky back, after appearing in only 3 films since 1980. The popular mouse will star in a series of 19 – 2D animated short films that will roll out on the Disney Channel and Disney.com beginning June 28.

A sneak preview of the first film Croissant de Triomphe has been released by Disney, which takes place in Paris where Minnie’s cafe runs out of croissants, and puts Mickey on the speedy challenge to deliver before the upset costumers lose their minds.

Croissant de Triomphe

This comes not too long after Disney’s Oscar win for best animated short film ‘Paperman‘, which show’s the company’s desire to revive their animation department, which has been dormant over the last decade or so (excluding Pixar pictures of course).

For now we are just happy to see the mouse back in action in this classy – old fashion looking cartoon series, taking place in different contemporary settings including Santa Monica, New York, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Venice, and the Alps, facing a silly situation, a quick complication, and an escalation of physical and visual gags.

Produced in 2D animation, the design esthetic for the Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts reaches back almost 80 years and borrows reverentially from the bold style of his 1930s design, but not before adding a few contemporary touches. Designs for other characters have a similar approach, favoring a “rubber-hose” cartoon style for more exaggerated animation. Background designs closely reflect the graphic design sense of 1950s and 1960s Disney cartoons. And for those true eagle-eyed Disney fans, the production team has also included the occasional homage to other icons from the storied Disney heritage.
