In the summer of 2011 I attempted to make a documentary about my hometown of Long Beach, New York. I began by asking people if Long Beach were swept away by a hurricane what would you want to be remembered about it? A year later and Long Beach was almost wiped off the map by Hurricane Sandy. In ‘We Like it Here’ I attempt to make sense of it all and the storms impact on my life.
Director’s Statement
This film is both a film about Hurricane Sandy but also a cautionary tale for those who are thinking about making a kickstater/gofundme to make a documentary that is super personal. This film took so long to make because it was really hard to keep watching footage of a very traumatic moment in my life over and over again. Year after year I felt in debt to those who contributed to my vision but I had a very hard time figuring out what that vision was. Finally over the last year I was able to gain enough distance from Hurricane Sandy that I was able to honestly look back at that time period and come to grips with it. Now that it is out in the world I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I can start to forget about Hurricane Sandy like I have always wanted to.
