Director’s Vision for ‘One Last Time’
ONE LAST TIME started as a writing exercise. Everything I had written had been feature-length, so I gave myself the challenge of writing a story in 10 pages, with just one location and two characters. I took me a day to write.
Which is why I was so surprised when a group of stunning artists rallied around the script. I decided early in the process to give them the space they needed to do their best work. I had worked with Serra Naiman and Garret Ryan before, and knew the depth of their skills as actors. I wasn’t, however, prepared for the performances they delivered. Serra is a master at the subtleties of acting, and Garret dug to depths I didn’t realize he had. They both blew me away.
Jon Philion, the Director of Photography, is a fascinating artist. His creative brain is always on, and he has a knack of finding those special moments in the visuals. I gave editor Mindy Elliott the footage and just said, “Tell the story you see.” The result was something I hadn’t imagined, but was so much more than my vision. She gave me the ending I didn’t even know I needed.
It truly became an art project for us all, and I couldn’t be prouder of the final product. Mostly, I just hope everyone enjoys watching it and takes away something from the piece.
