Ben and Eve had a fight at a house party. They both let off steam by meeting a friend in a pub to express their frustration and share their story. As they both tell their version of events, we find out what really happened that night.
Director’s Vision for ‘I Understand’
I initially wrote this film as a response to a painful breakup and wanted to approach what I experienced from both sides. But after completing the first draft, I actually got over the breakup and felt happy to move on and not have this person in my life anymore. At the same time my grandmother was in hospital and my mother was by her side almost every day, even though they had a troubled relationship and my grandmother did not like her as much as my aunt and uncle. When I asked her why she did this, she said “she is still my mother, I only have one”. This made me realise that fallouts with friends or lovers are devastating but usually you will get over it when time passes, but family is a bond made by blood. You know your parents, siblings or children since the day you are born and you share something special. Not only do I think family quarrels are more painful, I also noticed that many people experience them. With that in mind I rewrote the script to make it about a sibling relationship.
