A young single mother searches for the childlike wonder she once knew.
Director’s Vision for ‘Gratitude Journal’
At the beginning there was a baby. And a silly idea to make a film about a baby whilst we had one available. Gradually, the story turned out to be about a mother, a universal parent who strives to find a balance between the unconditional sacrificial love that raising children requires and a feeling of aspiration for something more. I think I explored my own existential fears through this mother, deepened by the suffocating pandemic happening all around me, my fears of becoming a parent, of finding my purpose and not wasting my life away. At the end, it all came back to the baby, Dominic, who showed me the immediacy, presence and purity of joy that humans are capable of.
