Director’s Vision for ‘Golden Child’

In a post-Me Too world, I have noticed a dearth of content that highlights the absurdity one encounters when grappling with sexual trauma. Of course, there is nothing funny about assault. But, in reality, the aftermath of it is often fraught with well-intentioned, misguided responses that are inherently comical. GOLDEN CHILD satirizes this minefield as it follows a young woman’s attempts to feel confident in herself while reckoning with bad things that happened in her childhood. Lulu, the protagonist’s, self-concept is enmeshed with her family’s perception of her: her body, her past. The film uses humor to explore how challenging it can be to process and define our experiences on our own terms — the messiness in trying to heal.
