Director’s Statement

“Donuts” is a story I’ve been wanting to tell for years, but could never get to something I liked. I wanted to educate people on the reality of living with body shame, but the script was always melodramatic or forced. I finally wrote this in a frenzy as if it were writing itself, and realized it was never supposed to be a story just about an eating disorder, but about the feelings of shame and guilt that come along with bulimia; universal feelings that result from many vastly different issues people struggle with. My wish is for audience members to recognize themselves in Alex — to remember our personal battles may not always be on display, but we’re all deeply connected with unspoken acknowledgment.
