A young man attempts to reconcile the longing for a past relationship.

Director’s Statement

BETWEEN was created as a lesson for myself. I was married then separated after 3 years. The relationship fell apart for a lot of reasons but the thing that stuck with me beyond getting over my own failures as a partner and the loss of this person I was in love with, was the loss of everything that goes into that relationship. Yes, you lose this partner that you’ve built a life with. You also lose their family.

I was really close to her family and didn’t want to let go and at first it didn’t seem like I had to.
It was in conversation with Kylie that I realized that was inevitable.
Looking back now obviously it seems insane that you’d do that, unless you had kids.
In my depression and naiveté, I had hoped that wouldn’t be the case for me.

It was really tough to shut those doors and this became a partial catharsis to work through that.
The last few lines were me speaking to myself.

I knew the beats of the story and I knew I wanted it to be more than just a conversation, but I didn’t consider myself a writer at that point.
I approached Kylie and she gave it the intelligence and life it required, in a quietly graceful form and for that I’m very thankful.
She’s become a notable Writer/Director in her own right so definitely check out her work.
