Facing a constant struggle to keep her head above water, Kira’s world collapses when she returns home from work one evening to find her car stolen. Vulnerable and alone, Kira must navigate the harrowing uncertainty of a night on the streets. Featuring the world famous poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi, as translated by Coleman Barks in its first cinematic adaptation, Suncatcher is a piercing exploration of mindfulness in the face of crisis. A haunting meditation that captures both the stunning beauty, and perilous isolation, of life on the fringes of Los Angeles’s coastal westside.

Director’s Vision for ‘Suncatcher’

In 2012, when I lost my home to a fire, my life became nearly unrecognizable in a matter of hours. With nothing more than my wallet, phone, car, and the gym clothes I was wearing, I began a journey that continues to shape who I am.

Suncatcher is a story about the quiet devastations that so often go unseen. It is anchored by the timeless poetry of Rumi, whose words offer Kira a life raft in the maelstrom of her crisis. His work speaks to the tension between despair and presence, a contrast I have felt deeply in my own life. That tug-of-war can be excruciating, but when I have allowed myself to fully inhabit it, it has often led to transformation.

With Suncatcher, I wanted to create a meditation as much as a narrative. A film that does not rush to resolution, but instead lingers in the liminal. It asks what it means to remain mindful in the face of collapse, and what fragments of beauty might still be found there.
