It is important to acknowledge that while this specific story does not encompass the entire world of pageantry, it is a story we feel needs to be told. In the theme of “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” this film begs our audiences to consider who the beholder is.
When I was 17 years old, I was sexually assaulted. The guilt and lies I told myself about the situation lasted years before I could speak up about the experience. I found myself lying to my friends, my parents, but mostly to myself. Instead of finding the courage to stand up for myself, I silenced my inner voice. When I came in contact with the pageant world, I found so many stories similar to those of my own – however, these stories were filtered through a world that only had room for glitter and glamour. I knew what it meant to hide from myself, and I could only imagine what that took when the only thing the world wanted from you was perfection
