Director’s Vision for ‘Residence’

“Residence” is my take on blending social satire with horror. Set in the cutthroat world of luxury LA real estate, it’s a film that uses humor and gore to peel back the polished veneer of status and privilege. The characters are all deeply flawed, obnoxious even, which makes their downfall both earned and strangely cathartic.

With “Residence,” I set out to create a layered film that gives the audience all the pieces of the puzzle without assembling them. Like my previous outings Bowlhead (2023) and Feeder (2021), the driving force behind the narrative is its central character—in this case, Sarah. Her motives are hidden, but her actions, at least from her perspective, are justified. This ambiguity gives the story depth, inviting viewers to engage more actively with what’s unfolding on screen.

In a horror genre oversaturated with jump scares and surface-level gore, I wanted “Residence” to stand out by leaving the audience wanting more. It’s a film that could go in any direction, where the unexpected can happen at any moment. By blending satire, social commentary, and horror, I aimed to create an experience that feels fresh and unsettling. The contrast between the glamorous setting and the horrific events speaks to the deeper theme—what are we willing to sacrifice for status and power?
