Ren is a young rhythmic gymnast vying for a spot on the National team. From her brash coach who demands perfection to an uncle who asks far too much of her, Ren’s life is both a performance and a test.

Director Statement

‘Renchik’ is based on my wife’s upbringing as a competing rhythmic gymnast. When we first started dating and learning about each other I quickly realized she had a unique teenage experience. After several conversations and researching the visual component of this specific sport, I knew I wanted to make something about this moment in her life.

For a lot of teenage girls and authority figures in this type of competing sport, these issues explored in the film are rarely spoken about or addressed. Stylistically, we decided to shoot it to mirror this separation: wide and from a distance.
