In a bold reimagining of Opera for the screen, ‘Oleum’ follows a wounded mechanic’s journey to hear the plaintive song of a local waitress one last time.

Director’s Vision for ‘Oleum’

‘Oleum’ was commissioned by The Sydney Opera House to rethink, reconstruct and reconfigure opera for the screen, in a narrative-driven, experimental and uniquely Australian story- A Sydney Opera.

Directed by duo, VERSUS (Tanya Babić and Jason Sukadana), ‘Oleum’ interrogates operatic tropes, transforming them into a contemporary Sydney screen narrative. The film outlines the fragility of human connection and how music universally aids our sensemaking of the world.

Featuring alt-rnb star, Maina Doe and frontman of post-punk/hip hop project Shady Nasty, Kevin Stathis with original composition by the internationally acclaimed and genre-defying, Corin Ileto, Oleum serves as a collision point for the gamut of flourishing Sydney creatives.
