An exploration of what lies beyond understanding.
Director’s Vision for ‘Noumena’
The title Noumena comes from the philosophical concept of the phenomena-noumena divide. Noumena being things in themselves, and phenomena, objects as we experience them through our senses.
Our search to understand the world (phenomena) has always existed. But we can only make sense of the world through our physical sensory frameworks. Developments, such as language, may help, but the millions of words that have been written attempting to fully understand our world still fall short. As Wittgenstein notes, ”The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” We can know some things for certain, such 2+2=4, but there are deeper mysteries of life and questions that can never achieve this certainty.
Maybe there is a reason our bodily senses and intellectual limits prohibit us from fully understanding the phenomena? Rather than seeing our senses as a limitation, may it be that these gifts of perception actually provide us the greatest insights.
