Director’s Vision for ‘Mary & Gus’

‘Mary and Gus’ is one of the most personal films I’ve made. It’s inspired directly by my own experience in a toxic romantic relationship, a dynamic where love and cruelty became inseparable. What started as a reflection on narcissistic personalities turned into something far more intimate: an exploration of the parts of myself I wasn’t ready to face.

I’ve long been fascinated by narcissism, and my work often examines power dynamics and manipulation. But recently, someone very close to me pointed out narcissistic tendencies in me. At first, the film started as an exploration of narcissism, but became something more personal: a story about two people trapped in a cycle of emotional warfare, unable to let go, even as they tear each other apart.

Through this story, I hope to offer an honest, sometimes darkly funny look at the messiness of love when it becomes a battleground, and to share a piece of my reckoning with those dynamics.
