Rina can’t look at her son Dean, who’s under house arrest at her home.
Tomorrow Dean’s trial starts.
As Rina doubts her ability to stand by his side, today, she will have to look into his eyes and hear the truth.
Director’s Vision for ‘Love Has Nothing to Do With It’
My biggest fear was (and still is) to become a parent.
I knew a teacher who was arrested for sexual charges.
He was held under house arrest at his mother’s. As he was waiting for his trial, I somehow couldn’t stop thinking about that mother.
What does she feel, between these four walls with him?
What does she ask him? What does she avoid asking?
We hear a lot of stories about criminals, but we rarely talk about their moms.
Making this short, I guess, was a way of tackling my fear of having children.
I think that we, as a society, tend to automatically accuse the relatives of the accused.
That is why I wanted this short to reflect on a society that blames Rina, despite her not having anything to do with the alleged crimes that her son committed. And whether he’s guilty or not, could she turn her back on him?
During the festival circuit of this short, in over 50 international film festivals,
I became a parent myself. That biggest fear came true.
But it couldn’t have happened without making this film first.
