Director’s Vision for ‘Grace’

GRACE lives in conversation with the motif known as the “Three Graces”, a theme we’ve seen throughout history to interpret what various time periods define as feminine beauty. What struck me as a filmmaker is that the vast majority of these interpretations were created by men. As a post-meta film GRACE aims to interrogate the artificial nature carefully crafted by the male gaze. While historically there are three Graces, our modern Grace is alone, on a quiet and cold set that feels just as artificial and claustrophobic as the shoot itself. Intentionally the film tries to both put you in her shoes, and remind you that you are watching a performance. We wanted to walk a narrow line to find the heart of the narrative and make our audience question how much we are willing to put women through to create “beautiful” images.
