After a routine follow up appointment, documentary filmmaker and thyroid cancer survivor, Bryn Silverman learns her treatment isn’t over. What begins as a solo investigation into the thoroughness of her healthcare, evolves into a larger re-imagining of the metrics we use to measure our well-being and the importance of community in healing
Director’s Vision for ‘Expression of Illness’
Expression of Illness is my directorial debut, in it you will see my overlapping interests: a spirit of curiosity, a commitment to research and loads of humor. My vision for the film is rooted in my experience as a thyroid cancer patient. Both in front of and behind the camera, I learn that a healthcare team is more than just my doctors. Together with my caregiver (and cinematographer) Naveen, we navigate the ins and outs of what being a patient looks like for me, which is rooted in access to information and my right to self-determine. By the end of the film, I want audiences to be left feeling a sense of peace and clarity in the face of the unknown.
