Novela

A frame-by-frame animation about a woman who tries to emulate the life of her favorite soap opera protagonist.

The film tells the story of Julia, a woman who realizes her life is not like the life of Jasmine Rose, her favorite soap opera protagonist. In an effort to “fix” herself, Julia tries to be more like the woman on the screen.

Most protagonists are presented as having a strong sense of self and a conviction of what is right and wrong. Julia is an unusual protagonist: she lacks conviction and is not “the protagonist” of her own film; she lives the worst version of Jasmine Rose’s life.

Jasmine Rose is an ideal symbol of womanhood to Julia: she gives her a direction to follow. Julia doesn’t have to think for herself what being a woman means: the idea of womanhood is already materialized as someone else, someone convincing, even if that someone else is fictional.
