The Guest / L’invité

by Colin L. Racicot

A Québec short film now available on Vimeo on Demand

It’s the dead of winter as we peer out of the windows of a cabin in the woods on the edge of a lake, snow falling gently on evergreen branches and frozen waters. An ageing ice fisherman sets out for his usual routine – only this time his catch of the day turns out to be something rather unexpected: a house guest. This somber meditation on loneliness and isolation is beautifully shot, well acted and expertly paced. (Original Title: L’INVITÉ)

Panhandler is about a struggling writer has a chance encounter with a mysterious man whose life story may provide the inspiration he finally needs.

Ollie is not having a good night. His ex-girlfriend’s band is having a show and Ollie subjects himself to song after song dealing with their breakup. He steps outside for some air and encounters Jim, a middle aged man Ollie assumes is a panhandler looking for money. After Jim assures Ollie he’s only trying to find his misplaced car, the two strike up a conversation and discover they share similar interests as both are writers. Jim tells Ollie he’s only pretending to be a homeless man in order to write about his experience, though Ollie remains skeptical. As the night progresses Ollie learns more about Jim and himself, possibly finding the inspiration for a great story to write and to get over his broken heart.

Sheep (singular)

by Jake Juba

Sheep (singular) is a kickstarter projects looking for your help! Jake Juba is a filmmaker/musician born and bred in the idyllic lands of North Yorkshire, and is now about to direct a film about sheep. Here is what Jake has to say about his film:

Written by playwright Gregory Skulnick, ‘Sheep (singular)’ follows Walter, a farmer attempting to reconnect with his children, in an exploration of divorce, growth and enduring love that draws heavily on our personal backgrounds. I think it is safe to say that in 21st Century, we are all presented with such issues and this is why our story must be told. Combining Greg’s witty narrative with my ‘artsy’ aesthetic, no doubt we’ll make quite a usual film!

Visit Sheep (singular)’s Kickstarter page and learn all about their project, and don’t forget to donate!
