Toonocalypse

Two students document the arrival of cute, cartoon aliens in Edinburgh, but after a year on Earth, the pair discover the true intention of the aliens visit.

Toonocalypse follows John and Michael, two students living in Edinburgh, as they document the arrival on Earth of a species of small, cute, cartoon aliens, known as “Toons”. Over time the Toons become integrated into society and into John and Michael’s lives, but after a year on Earth, without warning, some of the Toons start to change into something far larger and scarier. As John and Michael try to survive in the streets of Edinburgh they start to learn the grim reality of the Toons’ true intentions.

Toonocalypse started as a visual concept to show the traditional, venerated technique of 2D animation in a brand new context and to tell an alien invasion movie like no other. The film was successfully funded it’s £7000 budget via a Kickstarter campaign.

We made Toonocalypse as a profile booster for Owen as a director and for The 2D Workshop. Our main ambition was to get the film seen by as many people as possible, both in the film industry and members of the public.

A fun colorful and unwinding short with a touch of the cutest evil you’ve ever seen. The classic animation techniques bring a sense of nostalgia back to films like ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?‘. Where it may not bring the largest realism and visual depth, but it certainly leaves you with a gulp of unchained fun.
